The Mayor-Elect states his intention to reside in the storied Gracie Mansion
New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that sparked debate in his campaign.
An Iconic Home
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors after the post-war period.
But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key platform, was not quick to announce he would live there immediately after his triumph in November.
"My choice was based on keeping my family safe and the importance of directing my complete efforts on carrying out the affordability agenda voters elected me on," stated Mamdani in a statement.
Thanking a Neighborhood
He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, a district famous for its abundance of cultural enclaves and culinary diversity.
"To the people of Astoria: thank you for exemplifying the best of New York City," he noted.
"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, it will continue to reside within me and my work," he said.
Political Debate
During his campaign, Mamdani tied his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.
Yet his critics, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit even though he is from a prominent family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his time in office, which ended in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a venue for official events, and advocated for significant upgrades of the older mansion.
A Grand New Home
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings very different than his modest Astoria digs.
Adorned in cream-colored walls, emerald shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house overlooking the East River.
Internally, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished consistent with the home's original era.
The property, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also includes fortified protections to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, meaning the city regulates on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.
New Yorkers see such units as crucial resources as the housing expenses rises faster than the means of many residents.
Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the property website Zillow, the median rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
