Retired Australian Cricket Star Damien Martyn Hospitalized and in Induced Coma After Meningitis Diagnosed.
The former Australian Test cricketer Damien Martyn has been admitted to hospital and placed in an induced coma following a diagnosis of meningitis.
Critical Condition Revealed
Martyn, aged 54, “is facing the battle of his life”, as stated by former AFL player Brad Hardie, who revealed Martyn’s condition on Tuesday.
“We hope he can recover because it’s really serious,” stated Hardie.
His condition remains serious after falling ill on Boxing Day and being taken to a hospital in Queensland, as per sources close to the family.
About the Illness
Meningitis is inflammation of the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord.
An Illustrious Cricket Career
Widely regarded as one of Australia’s most talented batters, playing 67 Tests and scoring 4,406 Test runs averaging 46.37 from 1992 and 2006.
His unbeaten 88 in the 2003 World Cup final – with a broken finger – was instrumental in Australia's win over India.
Martin retired suddenly in the middle of the 2005-06 Ashes series in England following difficulties in the first couple of Tests.

Ex-colleague Darren Lehmann encouraged Martyn to “keep strong” via social media, as the cricket world started sending well wishes.
