No fewer than 13 people perish and ninety-eight wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.
A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's major government projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” stated the country's president.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his government's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a significant expansion of its duties in public projects. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, beating expectations to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised significant apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition urged an immediate pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and management of these national undertakings.
