LA Faces Record-Breaking High Temperatures Only Days Following Major Winter Storm.
Following a week of torrential rains that caused flooding across parts of the city, LA is now grappling with unseasonably high temperatures for late February.
All-Time High Temperatures
By Friday afternoon, the thermometer climbed to 91°F (33°C) in the city center, according to weather officials. This exceeds the prior high for February 27th, which was 31 degrees Celsius (88 Fahrenheit) and was recorded in the previous year.
"Unusually high temperatures" were noted on forecast graphics for the region.
Public Health Warnings
Forecasters stated that Friday's weather posed an "increased danger for heat illness" for people sensitive to heat. Their guidance included:
- Staying hydrated.
- Avoiding outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
- Never leaving children or pets unattended in a hot car.
A Dramatic Reversal
This dramatic increase in mercury follows closely after a massive winter storm that battered the region earlier in the week. That event brought thunderstorms, high winds, and heavy snow to mountainous regions, triggering evacuation orders for countless residents.
Sadly, the conditions also caused a deadly avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which left nine people dead from.
Forecast Ahead
Forecasters predict cooler conditions is coming. Temperatures were forecast to drop to around sixty-one degrees Fahrenheit in downtown LA by overnight.
Several cities that hit ninety degrees featured Long Beach, Burbank, and Woodland Hills. Meanwhile, Santa Maria, Oxnard, Camarillo, and Westwood were projected to experience the high 80s.
Over Saturday and Sunday, downtown LA can see readings in the 80s, with mid-70s temperatures expected for the following week.
