People have gathered around the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-led attack on October 7th, 2023, as discussions advanced in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the conflict in Gaza.

The incident led to over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured back to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely most lethal day for Jewish people since the Second World War.

Israel responded by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are seen as reliable by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"Our aggressive adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," the leader remarked on Tuesday.

He also pledged to "realize all the goals of the war: the return of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will not pose a threat to Israel".

Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel

The Israeli government rescheduled official memorials until October 16th - after the conclusion of the festive season - but events still took place throughout the country on that day.

A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was organized in the coastal city. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was televised throughout Israeli TV networks.

Hours earlier, a moment of silence was observed around the country.

Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt

At the same time, both sides' negotiating teams convened in the North African Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of mediated discussions to examine the provisions of the agreement.

A high-ranking Palestinian official knowledgeable about the talks indicated that an evening round of mediated discussions began at evening in Egypt.

The official explained the day's discussions concluded without significant progress, because of disagreements over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not restart fighting after the opening period of the agreement.

He added that the talks are "tough and have yet to produce any major advancement," but mentioned that facilitators are striving to reduce the gaps between the two sides.

Critical Issues in Negotiations

  • A permanent truce
  • The swap of the hostages still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
  • Measures for humanitarian aid provision
  • Future governance of the area

Citizen Sentiment

In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member endured the incident on the gathering, where 378 people were killed and dozens more were abducted by Hamas militants - shared: "No location feels like home now and until every captive come back not a single person will have peace of mind."

"When we see everyone home again, we can breathe anew. Then we can commence heal," she continued.

In front of the prime minister's residence in Jerusalem, people gathered to demonstrate their solidarity for the families of the abducted. Israel says forty-eight continue in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be surviving.

Demonstrator one woman remarked: "We must do any agreement necessary for the abducted to be released. But we really want promises that we will be safe."

Research now regularly indicate that about the majority of Israelis prefer the hostilities to conclude in return for the release of the abducted.

Gaza Conditions

At the location of the gathering, mourners assembled to pay their respects.

From that location, the noise of military attacks and explosions could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses said the severe Israeli shelling continued.

In the main city, attacks were reported in the early hours of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, sector and locality neighbourhoods and in the eastern neighbourhood of the community, as well the settlement to the northwest.

"Once the night falls, the fear comes with it," relocated urban resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack last year, described.

"My family are afraid of the attacks. During nighttime we are sleeping together, clinging, particularly my smallest child who puts his head on me throughout the night."

"Continuously we check the news to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the conflict will return to us."

Humanitarian Emergency

Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City announced it had taken in the bodies of half dozen people by the daytime, including a trio killed in an Israeli strike in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.

A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of that area said additional victims had been delivered. An individual was died by Israeli forces while looking for aid to the southern area, medical staff said.

Gaza's health ministry reported twenty-five of the {territ
