Information Available About the Fatalities of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 people were killed and more than 40 sustained injuries when gunmen shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police are describing as a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were transported to hospital.

The victims have not yet been publicly named, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She told the moments leading up to the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement continued.

One Child

A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
