Cameroon Opposition Leader Faces Legal Proceedings Concerning Election Unrest, Government Declares

Political Demonstration in Cameroon
Many in Cameroon express anger that the president has secured an eighth consecutive term

Cameroon's Minister of the Interior the interior minister has stated that political opponent Issa Tchiroma Bakary will be prosecuted over allegations that he instigated "aggressive electoral rallies".

No fewer than 4 protesters have been lost their lives during confrontations between security forces and opposition supporters since Cameroon's election on 12 October, with President Paul Biya, aged 92 winning an eighth consecutive term.

The opposition leader insists that he was the true winner, a statement dismissed by the governing party, the Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM).

Forceful measures by security personnel on demonstrators have worried the world leaders, with the UN, African Union and European Union urging caution.

Official's Allegations

On Tuesday, Nji charged Tchiroma Bakary of coordinating what he described as "unlawful" demonstrations causing the deaths, and also criticised him for announcing success in the electoral contest.

He noted that Tchiroma Bakary's "co-conspirators responsible for an insurrectionary plan" will also undergo judicial processes.

Vote Outcome

Cameroon's leader, who assumed office in the early 80s and is now the most elderly national leader, secured the 12 October vote with over half of the votes, compared to a significant minority for his opponent, according to the electoral authority.

Challenger's Position

Issa Tchiroma is has not yet commented to the authorities' move to bring him to court, but he had previously declared that he would not accept a rigged election - and that he was not afraid of being taken into custody.

When results were announced, he claimed that security forces used lethal force on demonstrators gathered near his house in Garoua, killing at least two individuals.

Inquiry Announced

Recently, the government official disclosed that an probe would be initiated into violent incidents surrounding the announcement of the poll figures.

"Throughout the violence, some of the perpetrators died," he stated, without offering a specific number of protesters who have been fatally injured in the incidents.

The minister added that a number of personnel of the law enforcement also received serious injuries.

Ongoing Circumstances

While Nji asserted the situation throughout Cameroon was now stable, demonstrators are still demonstrating in some parts of the country, especially in these two cities, where protesters established obstructions on Tuesday, and set fire to rubber on the streets.

Analysts warn that the post-electoral violence could push the nation into a leadership vacuum.
