Arteta Praises ‘More Reliable’ Squad and Acknowledges Kai Havertz Injury Blow.
Arsenal's manager feels assured that his squad can keep managing with fitness issues following disclosing that forward Kai Havertz will not return for a few more weeks.
Extended Absence for German Star
The German forward has been absent since August following an operation on his knee. Hoped to come back earlier in December, Arteta revealed the player hit a snag when advancing his training and failed to reach “the next phase.”
“We learned, and we were able to put together a squad that is far more dependable and has greater depth,” stated the manager.
Tactical Decisions for Midweek Fixture
This development leaves a dilemma for Wednesday’s match against Brentford. A decision is required between persisting with Mikel Merino, who found the net in an unfamiliar forward role on Sunday, or reinstating Viktor Gyökeres, who made a return after a fitness issue in the latter stages. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus is in contention after 11 months out.
Fitness Doubts Remain
Further fitness issues involve centre-back William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who sat out the Stamford Bridge game. Consequently, recent arrivals Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié will probably continue in the heart of the defence for the Premier League front-runners.
Arteta believes the significant outlay on new players in the last transfer window has placed the club in a more robust situation to navigate such setbacks.
Greater Options Vital for Premier League Pursuit
When asked if a larger pool of players was benefiting their championship push, Arteta was emphatic. “Yes, because this season has been worse in some areas, and now the situation with the backline,” he noted.
“Our previous experiences taught us that we have to use players in various roles, and they need to be prepared to fulfil different roles if we want to compete at the highest level. And the example of Mikel is just the best one.”
Manager’s Sympathy for Suffering Star
Commenting on the complication highlighted by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, the manager gave additional context. “His recovery was progressing. He failed to advance to the subsequent stage and now it appears like we have unlocked that.”
He shared his eagerness to welcome him back. “The team is keen to have him. Honestly, he is a footballer who, in my view, I love so much for what he brings to the team, but his character, his nature. I watch him struggle while sidelined.”
“His playing record is outstanding, he's usually fit, and I am eagerly awaiting to see him return involved playing because I think it’s going to be a significant uplift.”
