Arrangements for Trump-Putin Meeting Shelved Days Following Budapest Negotiations Announced
Currently exist "no arrangements" for American leader President Trump to meet Russia's Vladimir Putin "anytime soon", a White House official has announced.
Recently the US president said he and the Kremlin leader would conduct negotiations in Hungary's capital soon to discuss the ongoing hostilities.
A initial discussion between US Secretary of State Secretary Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was due to be held recently - but the White House clarified the two had had a "constructive" conversation and that a meeting was no longer "necessary".
The administration declined to provide additional specifics on why the talks had been delayed.
Background Context
Trump had discussed a Hungarian meeting via telephone with Putin, a just prior to meeting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the Oval Office.
Certain accounts suggested his talks with Zelensky had been a "contentious discussion", with those familiar claiming Trump had urged him to relinquish extensive regions of Ukraine's east as part of a deal with Moscow.
Yet, on Monday the American president endorsed a ceasefire proposal backed by Ukraine and European leaders to halt the hostilities on the current front line.
"Freeze the lines in its current state," he remarked.
Russia has frequently resisted against freezing the present battle positions.
The Russian government was exclusively seeking "long-term, sustainable peace", Russia's foreign minister stated on Tuesday, indicating that halting hostilities would simply constitute a brief pause.
Negotiating Stances
The "root causes" of the conflict needed to be addressed, the Russian diplomat stated, using Moscow's terminology for a range of extensive requirements that include the acceptance of total Russian authority over the Donbas as well as the military reduction of Ukraine – a unacceptable proposition for Ukraine and its Western allies.
Zelensky stated conversations concerning the current lines were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Moscow was "taking all measures" to evade negotiations.
He also said the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "take notice" was that of the provision of long-range weapons to Ukraine.
Weapons Discussions
The Russian president's spontaneous discussion with Trump last Thursday occurred before speculation that the United States was preparing to send extended-range cruise missiles to Ukrainian forces that could theoretically target deep into Russia.
The Ukrainian leader stated it was the Tomahawks issue that had forced Russia to enter into dialogue. The talk about the weapons systems had proven to be a "strong investment" in international relations", he commented.
