Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Secures a Major Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the channel introduced a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a contemplative talk show. In an era often defined by dark humor, this show's sincerity struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.

"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."

Network Praise

Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and supported its uniquely offbeat style.

"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about observing this lovable family navigate their simple existence.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running layer of irony. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.

“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

Future Seasons

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially be part of that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to experience the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
