A Pig's Tale: Hog Named Six Seven Pardoned by Miami Dade County Leader.
Although not quite at the identical stature as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the county's top official experienced a presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She deserves this act of mercy. No offenses are on her docket,” stated the mayor in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of pardons issued from the start of the onset of a new presidential term.
“Except perhaps for eating six or seven apples per day,” she went on. “May this pig enjoy a long and happy life without fear.”
The gathering, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of feasting on pork during the holidays, was established to emulate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The swine, contributed by a local firefighter, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people shouting “6-7” – originating from a musical verse – often for no discernable reason. The craze became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently made “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The pig pardon has become a cherished method to kick off the festive period,” said the cafe owner, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It captures the essence of Miami: vibrant, multicultural, and based in heritage that unite the community. Annually, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Attendees enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach fritters and strong coffee as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
